FH: Abby Warriner named OUA Most Valuable Player; Ella Rideout and Warriner named All-Stars

BURLINGTON, Ont. – On Thursday afternoon (Oct. 23), Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced the major award winners and all-star selections for the 2025 OUA field hockey season. Two Gryphon field hockey players, Abby Warriner and Ella Rideout, earned OUA All-Star status, with Warriner being named the Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive season.

Fifth-year midfielder Abby Warriner has been named the OUA's 'Most Valuable Player' for the 2025 season, becoming the first player since Brittany Seidler (2011 & 12) to win back-to-back MVP awards. Warriner, the biomedical engineering major, continues to add on to her already impressive Gryphon career. The reigning U SPORTS Player of the Year added a goal scoring element to her game this season, scoring 7 times in 8 games played, leading the team in goals scored and was tied for 2nd in the OUA. The Newmarket, ON native also plays a crucial role on defence for her team in her sweeper role in the Guelph midfield. Warriner is also a team captain on the team, helping lead her side to a 7-1-2 (win-loss-draw) record a place in the OUA Field Hockey Championship tournament. Warriner was also named to the OUA All-Star as this marks the fourth consecutive season she's been recognized as a provincial all-star.

Joining Warriner as an OUA All-Star is third year defender Ella Rideout. For Rideout, this is her first time she's been named an OUA All-Star. The human kinetics major from North Vancouver, BC is the leader and quarterback of a stout Gryphon defence that allowed only 6 goals in 8 games this season to go along with 4 shutouts. Rideout is one of the best defenders at shutting down the opposing team's top attackers. In her seven games played, Rideout has an assist to her name.

The Gryphons will now make the short trip to Waterloo for the OUA Field Hockey Championship as they take on the York Lions in the semifinals on Saturday (Oct. 25) with the medal games set to take place on Sunday (Oct. 26) from Warrior Field.
