ROWING RECAP: Gryphons Rowing Teams Produce Best-Ever Results at an OUA Rowing Championship; Women Finish 3rd, Men 5th in Final Team Standings

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons varsity rowing teams made program history on Friday, October 25, producing their best-ever team results at an OUA Rowing Championships. A total of 35 student-athletes representing the University of Guelph made their way to the Royal Henley Rowing Course in St. Catharines, Ontario on Friday, October 25 for the 2024 OUA Rowing Championships. 2024 OUA Rowing ChampionshipsThe Gryphon women finished 3rd in the overall team standings (highest ever placement by a Gryphons women's rowing team at an OUA Championship), while the U of G men finished 5th (matching the best-ever placement by a Gryphons men's team, with the Gryphon men also placing 5th back in 2011).
 
With weather forecasts for the Saturday (Oct. 28) of competition predicting wind gusts into the 40km/hr range, RowOntario compressed the two-day regatta into a 1-day format on Friday (Oct. 25) with athletes racing heats and finals across the morning and afternoon. 
 
Gryphon medal finishes were led by the men's team with bronze medals in the open men's pair (Logan Baird, Edward Vander Wilp), lightweight men's single (James Rourke) and the JV men's double (Fisher Barrett, Shuntaro MacKenzie).
 
The women's team's individual finishes were led by Kate Fletcher in the Open Women's single, who hit two new personal bests over the day and finished 4th in a field of competitive scullers. The Gryphons novice women's eight also raced to a 4th-place finish.
 
The OUA men's title was won by the host Brock Badgers, while the Queen's Gaels took the 2024 OUA women's rowing banner. Visit oua.ca for more details.
