NORDIC RECAP: Gryphon Men & Women Place 7th at 2023 OUA Nordic Skiing Championships

HUNTSVILLE, Ont. -  A total of 12 student-athletes (eight women, four men) from the Guelph Gryphons varsity nordic ski program made the trip north to Huntsville to compete in the 2023 OUA Nordic Skiing Championships, hosted by the University of Waterloo (Feb. 22-24). Julia Shannon @ 2023 OUA ChampionshipsOn both the men's and women's side of competition the Gryphons finished 7th out of 8 schools on the women's side and 9 schools on the men's side. 

Leading the way for the Gryphons on the men's side was Alec MacLean. The 4th-year mechanical engineering major produced the best finish of any Gryphon skiier in the opening race of the championships on Wednesday (Feb. 22), placing 6th (in a field of 56 racers) in the men's 7.5km interval start with a time of 18:43.4. On Thursday morning, MacLean put on another impressive perfromance, this time crossing the finish line in 23rd (out of 56 racers) in the men's 15km mass start. 

Headlining the championship on the women's side for the Gryphons was 3rd-year human kinetics major, Julia Shannon. The Seguin, Ontario native placed 21st (out of 59 racers) on Wednesday morning in the women's 7.5km interval start before jumping up the standings with a 16th place finish (out of 61) in the women's 15km mass start on Thursday. 

The Carleton Ravens women's team claimed the OUA title for the fifth time in six seasons while on the men's side the Lakehead Thunderwolves won their second straight championship banner.
