SUDBURY, Ont. – A total of 10 student-athletes (six women, four men) from the Guelph Gryphons varsity nordic ski program made their way to Sudbury this past weekend (Feb. 25-27) to compete in the 2022 OUA Nordic Skiing Championships, hosted by Laurentian University. The Gryphon men finished 6th out of 11 schools in the final team standings, while the Gryphon women placed 8th out of 11 universities from across the province.
"Our nordic ski team had a great weekend of racing," said Mariah Hudec, associate head coach for Gryphons nordic skiing. "After a challenging couple of years, it has been great to get back to racing. This OUA Championship was a fantastic opportunity for us to see the effort these student-athletes have put in all year pay off."
Leading the way for the Gryphons on the men's side was
Alec MacLean. The third-year mechanical engineering major was just :13 seconds shy of earning OUA All-Star status, with the Oro-Medonte, Ontario native finishing the OUA Championships as the No. 12-ranked skiier on the men's side (out of 62 skiiers). On Saturday morning, in the opening race of the weekend, MacLean produced the best-finish of any Gryphon skiier on the weekend by placing 7th overall (in a field of 64 racers) in the men's 10.5km interval start freestyle with a time of 30:01.9. On Sunday morning, MacLean put in another impressive performance, this time placing 17th (out of a field of 64) in the men's 10.5km classic mass start.
Headlining the results on the women's side for the Gryphons was
Julia Shannon. The second-year human kinetics major was the first Gryphon to cross the finish line in both races on Saturday and Sunday, placing 24th (out of 68) in the women's 10.5km freestyle, followed by 29th (out of 67) in the women's 10.5km classic mass start.
