TORONTO, Ont. - Getting playoff Sunday underway at the 2022 OUA Women's Lacrosse Championship underway from Varsity Stadium, the Queen's Gaels punched their ticket to the gold medal game with a 10-2 victory over the Guelph Gryphons. The top-seed from pool play, the Gaels came out looking every bit the part on Sunday. Scoring twice in the first two minutes of the contest, Queen's was quickly able to establish a lead, that they would then continue adding to. After Jaedyn Smail and Abby Lee got the scoring started for Queen's, it was Tara Meikle, Charlotte Sawicki and Smail again increasing the Gaels advantage to 5-0 through one quarter of play. Despite the deficit, it did not seem to faze the Gryphons, as they used the second quarter to pull themselves back into the contest. Keeping the Gaels off the scoreboard, while more importantly getting goals form
Esmee Hotson and
Payton Curtis, Guelph had themselves within three at halftime. Using the break to regroup, the Gaels were able to come out in the third and shift momentum back in their favour. Getting back on the offensive, Lee tallied her second goal of the game, before Smail completed the hat-trick to restore Queen's five goal lead. During the final 15 minutes of play, the crew from Kingston began to pull away thanks to goals from Brooke Rutledge, Christina Holmes and a second from Meikle. Queen's will now take on the winner of Trent and Western at 5:00 p.m. in the gold medal game. The Gryphons will battle for bronze at 3:00 p.m. against the loser of Trent and Western.
