Gryphons Honour record 193 student-athletes at annual Scholar-Athlete Reception

193 Gryphon Student-Athletes achieved 80% or above during 2018-19 academic calendar year

Guelph, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons have become synonymous with success. The 2018-19 season was an unforgettable year in teams of on-field success, the Gryphons were the most successful school in the country after recording more top-three finishes at nationals than any other U SPORTS institution.

While the on-field achievements were outstanding, they become even more impressive when you factor in the incredible academic achievements of the varsity athletes during the 18-19' campaign.

A total of 193 Guelph Gryphon student-athletes were U SPORTS Academic All-Canadians and OUA Achievement Award Winners last year. To receive these awards eligible student-athletes must earn a grade-point average of at least 80 percent.

The 193 honourees represent one of the highest number of scholar-athlete individual recognitions in the history of Gryphon Athletics and were honoured last night at a reception held at Cutten Fields Golf
Course.

Director of Athletics Scott McRoberts was struck by the total number of Gryphon scholars.

"It was a record year for excellence on the field and in the classroom and I'm incredibly proud. We have 750 varsity athletes competing for the Gryphons. 193 of those have achieved an average of 80% or higher. To see that 25.7% and 1-in-4 of our student-athletes are scholars speaks to their commitment to excellence."

Tuesday's reception was not only well attended in terms of representation from the student-athletes, but also featured representation from the University's administration. Among those in attendance were Charlotte Yates, provost and vice-president academic, Carrie Chassels, vice-provost, student affairs, as well as various Deans and academic counselors.
