Box Score 3 KINGSTON, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons field hockey team got a chance to showcase its offensive ability this past weekend, winning two of three matches on the road in Kingston. The Gryphons soundly defeated the McGill Martlets 6-0 and 10-0 on consecutive days, while also dropping a 2-0 decision to the defending OUA champion York Lions.
Third-year forward
Kayla Magarelli had a hat-trick and fourth-year forward
Katherine MacMillan had a goal and an assist in the 6-0 win over McGill on Saturday. And MacMillan was the catalyst the following day against the Martlets, scoring four times and adding two assists in a 10-0 shutout.
Magarelli, a midfielder who played an attacking role last year when MacMillan was lost for the season with a knee injury, got the Gryphons going in the opening game of the weekend with goals in the 31
st and 34
th minute to put her team up 2-0 at the half. It was all the offence they would need but Guelph kept up the pressure and got goals from rookie
Bailey Mitchell, MacMillan, and Magarelli's third, before first-year defender
Vanessa Schiefer scored the sixth of the game on a penalty corner.
Guelph and York drew 1-1 in their previous meeting back on Sept. 16 but the Gryphons couldn't generate any offence in the rematch. They were on the back foot early after an error inside their own circle resulted in York's opening goal, and the eventual game-winner, in the 16
th minute.
Guelph got the momentum back and had several good stretches in which it pressured the Lions but none of the scoring opportunities created resulted in a goal. The Lions would add an insurance marker in the 49
th minute to secure the 2-0 win.
The Gryphons regrouped for their second game of the weekend with McGill and the offence came alive again. Mitchell got the first goal and MacMillan lifted one over the Martlets' goalie to make it 2-0.
Danielle Crumpton scored two straight, then All-Canadian defender
Rebecca Plouffe executed a beautiful give and go with MacMillan to score her first of the game, sending Guelph into the half comfortably ahead 5-0.
The Gryphons kept the pace up in the second half and scored five more times, including three from MacMillan. The Kitchener, ON native finished third in the country in scoring in 2016 with 12 goals in 12 games. After missing all of 2017, she is back in form and had now score nine times in seven games.
Gryphon Take
"Six different players figured in on the scoring so our opponents can't key in on just one player. It was great to see we found the back of the net on more of our chances as we create so many scoring opportunities for ourselves." –
head coach Michelle Turley
The Record
Guelph is 4-2-1.
