Kayla Magarelli (FH) & Erich Milne (MRGBY) Named Gryphon MUSCLE MLK Athletes of the Week

GUELPHKayla Magarelli (Field Hockey) and Erich Milne (Men's Rugby) have been named Gryphon MUSCLE MLK Athletes of the Week for the period ending October 10, 2017.

Kayla Magarelli - Field Hockey

Kayla Magarelli, a second year midfielder on the Gryphons Field Hockey team, takes home Athlete of the Week honours after a standout performance in a road win over the Waterloo Warriors. On Friday (Oct. 6) at Warrior Field, Magarelli scored a pair of goals and assisted on another in the Gryphons' 4-0 win over Waterloo. The Biological Science major opened the scoring early, with her first of two goals coming in just the 3rd minute of play. Early in the 2nd half, the Vaughan, Ontario native picked up a beautiful assist, stealing the ball off a Waterloo player before setting up teammate Maria Murray to give the Gryphs a 3-0 lead. In the 54th minute, Kayla capped off a memorable performance by capping the scoring with her second of the day to send the Gryphons into the Thanksgiving break in 2nd place in the OUA with a 4-1-2 record.

Erich Milne - Men's Rugby

The Gryphons men's rugby team lost several key pieces from last year's OUA championship squad. Thanks to players like Erich Milne, the 2017 version of the Gryphons are once again right back in the thick of a title hunt. Third year student Erich Milne takes home Gryphon Athlete of the Week honours after scoring three tries on Friday night (Oct. 6) in Guelph's 52-0 victory over the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks. Milne, a History student from Uxbridge, Ontario, got the Gryphons off to a good start Friday night, scoring tries in the 13th and 19th minutes, respectively. Milne, who is now logging the most playing time of his U of G career following the departure of All-Star Eric Charest-Pekeski from last year's squad, would cap off his impressive night with his third try of the match, this one coming early in the 2nd half to push the Guelph lead to 26-0. Milne and the Gryphons currently sit 2nd in the OUA standings with a 5-1 record. The Gryphs have two regular season games remaining on the schedule before beginning their quest for back-to-back OUA titles.
