WVB: Gryphons Start McMaster Thanksgiving Tournament with Win Over Nipissing

HAMILTON, ON - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team began the McMaster Thanksgiving Invitational tournament Thursday evening (Oct. 6) with a 3-0 win over the Nipissing Lakers. Set scores were 25-22, 25-15 & 25-17. The first set was a back and forth battle as each team settled into the match trading points. The Gryphons held a slim 16-14 edge at the technical timeout but some tough serving allowed Guelph enough of an edge to win 25-22. Set 2 was close again early but Guelph seized control in the middle of the set to win comfortably at 25-15. A fast start to the third set saw the Gryphons leading 8-4 and 16-12 at the technical timeout. Guelph surged to a big lead later before a small Nipissing rally narrowed the lead to 4, but Laura Duncan's tough serving gave the Gryphons the late push to win 25-17.

Coach Paul Funk stated, "We had a pretty good team effort tonight and didn't give up any extended Nipissing runs. Our blocking and serving definitely gave us the edge we needed to get the win." With the win, Guelph now moves to the top half of the tournament draw where they will face the Ryerson Rams Friday at 4pm.
