WVB: Gryphons fall to No. 6 Ottawa in OUA semi-final

Box Score
Guelph, ON - The Gryphons women's volleyball team lost 3-1 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees Friday night in the opening match of the OUA Final Four tournament, hosted by the University of Guelph.  With the loss, the Gryphons will now play in the bronze medal match on Saturday at 6pm, while the Gee-Gees advance to the gold medal match Saturday at 8:30pm.

With a potential berth in the CIS Championships up for grabs, the intensity of the match was noticeable from the first point of the match.  Ottawa's attack would be heavily dominated by Miriam English (Orleans, ON) and Kaly Soro (Ottawa, ON) as they would combine for 13 of Ottawa's 16 kills in the opening set. The Gee-Gees, who are ranked No. 6 in the country, were able to take the opening set 25-16.

In the second set, the Gryphons would re-group and give the hometown crowd plenty to cheer about. Led by Shannon Morelli (London, ON) and Becky Breau (London, ON), the Grypnons took it to the GeeGees, in a set that featured several long, entertaining rallies.  When the dust settled, the Gryphons were able to even the match at a set apiece, winning the set 25-16.

In the third set, the Gryphons continued to hang with one of the top teams in the country as things were knotted at 12-12 mid way through the set.  However, the Gee-Gees continued to get strong play from OUA All-Star Myriam English, as well as from 6-foot-1 second year standout Kaly Soro.  A late push by the Gee-Gees in that set allowed them to come out on top 25-19 and take a 2-sets-to-1 lead.

The Gryphons hopes of forcing a fifth set took a big blow after they got off to a slow start.  The Gee-Gees won the first five points of the fourt set to put the Gryphons in a big hole right out of the gates. Guelph was unable to gather any real momentum after that, as the Gee-Gees would win the fourth set 25-16 to take the match 3-1.

Player of the Game honours went to Miriam English from Ottawa, while the Gryphons Player of the Game award went to a first year player who stepped up big in Victoria Golebiowski.
