MHKY: Warriors take Game 1 behind big 2nd period

Box Score
Waterloo, ON – The Waterloo Warriors exploded for five goals in a span of just over 10 minutes in the second period to win Game 1 of their OUA quarter-final matchup with the Guelph Gryphons.  Game 2 of the best-of-three series is set for Thursday night at the Gryphon Centre.

After these two teams split a pair of regular season matchups, with both games being decided by just one goal, it appeared as though another tight contest was in the making.  The opening period would end 0-0, with Gryphons rookie goalie Andrew D'Agostini looking sharp.  In the second period, the Warriors would open the scoring exactly one minute into the period on a goal from Colin Behenna.  Two more goals coming just 26 seconds apart would push the Waterloo lead to 3-0.  After Riley Sonnenburg made it 4-0 Warriors, Behenna would score his second of the night to cap off a five goal blitz that came in a span of 10:13.  That five goal outburst would prove to be the only scoring of the night as the third period, like the first, would be a scoreless one.  Waterloo goalie Mike Morrison turned away all 34 shots sent his way for the shutout.

The Warriors and Gryphons are meeting in the OUA playoffs for the first time since the 1992-1993 season.  The Gryphons will try to avoid elimination and force a third game when the puck drops at 7:30pm Thursday night at the Gryphon Centre.
