MHKY RECAP: Gryphons Fall 4-1 to TMU in Season Opener

GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons men's hockey team officially dropped the puck on their 2026-27 regular season on Friday night (Oct. 9) from the Gryphon Centre Arena, where the Gryphons fell to the TMU Bold, 4-1, in a tightly-contested regular season opener. Gryphons third-year forward, Nolan Dann, picked up right where he left off following a sensational 2025-26 season, with the reigning OUA West MVP and U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian scoring his first goal of the new season midway through the opening period of play to give Guelph a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, however, the TMU Bold would respond with a power play goal of their own from Gavin Grundner to tie things up at 1-1 after 20 minutes of play. Gryphons second-year goalie, Olivier Ciarlo (Laval, QC) impressed throughout the night, but after a scoreless 2nd period, TMU would finally find a way past Ciarlo, with a point shot from Brendan Tomlinson finding the top left corner of the net to give TMU the 2-1 lead midway through the 3rd. The Bold would put it away with 5:23 left in the period when Connor Bowie scored off a rebound, with TMU later adding an empty net goal to clinch the 4-1 win. Ciarlo turned away 35 of the 38 shots he saw on the night. The Gryphons (0-1-0) are back in action Saturday night (Oct. 10) when they host the Lakehead Thunderwolves from the Gryphon Centre. Puck drop is scheduled from 7:30pm and can be streamed for free, live online at www.oua.tv as part of the inaugaural "OUA Week." Tickets for Saturday night's game are available online at www.gryphons.ca/tickets.
