WHKY: Gryphons win in OT for second straight game

Box Score
Sudbury, ON - After winning 3-2 in overtime on Saturday afternoon in North Bay, the Gryphons Women's Hockey team traveled to Sudbury for a Sunday afternoon matchup with the Laurentian Voyageurs and earned a second win in as many days thanks to yet another 3-2 OT win. Leigh Shilton scored twice for the Gryphons, including the OT winner, as U of G improved to 7-2-2 on the season while Laurentian falls to 5-4-1.

The Gryphons rolled into Laurentian's Countryside Arena on Sunday afternoon as the No. 1-ranked team in the country and winners of six straight. However, the Voyageurs were able to open the scoring in the 2nd period with a power play goal and took a 1-0 lead to the final period. Through the first 40 minutes, the Gryphons were out-shooting the Voyageurs 20-13 but had nothing to show for it. In the 3rd period, the Gryphons only managed four shots on net, but they made them count. 1:15 into the final frame, Guelph would tie the game at 1-1 on a goal from Kelly Gribbons (Port Elgin, ON), her third goal in her last three games. Just over three minutes later, the Gryphons would take the lead thanks to Leigh Shilton's fourth of the season as U of G took a 2-1 lead. After Laurentian was able to answer back later in the period to tie the game at 2-2, the Gryphons would find themselves heading to OT for a second straight day.

2:24 into the overtime period, the Gryphons would score the winner thanks to their co-captain and fifth year leader Leigh Shilton. Her second goal of the night, and third of the weekend, would give the Gryphons a 3-2 win and push their overall winning streak to seven games. The seven straight wins is the second longest active win streak in the CIS, with only the St. Mary's Huskies riding a longer streak with nine straight. Valerie Lamenta made 18 saves and improves to 8-1-0 on the season. For the first time in program history, the Gryphons will now play on home ice as the top ranked team in the country when they return to the Gryphon Centre for a Thursday night clash with the Waterloo Warriors. Puck drop is set for 7:30pm.
