GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2025-26 season, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our Gryphon varsity programs as part of our 'Gryph's Locker Athletes of the Week, presented by POWERADE' series.
Katherine Heard (women's hockey) has been named 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week' for the period covering March 16 to 22, 2026.

In our final installment of our 'Gryphon Athlete of the Week' series for the 2025-26 season,
Katherine Heard takes homes the honours for the third time this season. The fifth-year forward capped off her memorable season with an outstanding showing at the 2026 U SPORTS Women's Hockey Championships from Elmira, Ontario. The Gryphons opened up play in the quarterfinals against the Waterloo Warriors (March 19) as Heard opened the scoring for her side, circling the net as she fired one into the top corner, a goal which turned out to be the game-winner in her team's 2-0 win over their OUA West rivals. The sociology major continued her goal scoring touch in Sunday's bronze medal game (March 22) against the UNB Reds when she broke free on the breakaway and scored a shorthanded goal to tie up game at 1-1, a game which UNB would ultimately edge the Gryphons 2-1, with Guelph finishing in 4th-place at nationals. For the OUA West MVP and first team All-Star, it was her second goal at nationals and her 5th goal of the postseason (in 9 playoff games played). Heard during the regular season, led the team with 24 points (6th in OUA) and scored 8 goals while playing in all 26 games. The Arva, Ontario native scored the game-winning goal in the third period on March 14 in the OUA Championship Game to clinch the McCaw Cup for the 8th OUA title in program history.
