Katherine Heard (Women's Hockey) Named OUA Athlete of the Week

BURLINGTON, Ont. – For the 13th and final time during the 2025-26 season, a University of Guelph student-athlete has been named 'OUA Athlete of the Week.' Katherine Heard of the Gryphons women's hockey team has been 'OUA Athlete of the Week' for the third time this season, alongside Conor Frenette (UQTR men's hockey) for the period covering March 16 to 22, 2026. Heard, a sociology major at the U of G scored to a pair of goals at the 2026 U SPORTS Women's Hockey Championships in the Gryphons 4th-place showing at nationals.

Gryphons women's hockey team captain Katherine Heard has been named 'OUA Athlete of the Week' for the third time this season. The fifth-year forward closed out her memorable season with an outstanding showing at the 2026 U SPORTS Women's Hockey Championships from Elmira, Ontario. Heard got the Gryphons out to an early lead in their quarterfinal game (Mar. 19) against the Waterloo Warriors as the she circled the net and fired one into the top corner to not only give her team the 1-0 lead, it turned out to be the game-winning goal in Guelph's 2-0 win over their OUA West division rival. The Arva, Ontario native continued her scoring ways in the team's bronze medal game (Mar. 22) against the UNB Reds when she broke free on the breakaway and scored a shorthanded goal to tie up game at 1-1, a game which UNB would ultimately edge the Gryphons 2-1, with Guelph finishing in 4th-place at nationals. The goal was Heard's second at nationals and her 5th goal of the postseason (in 9 playoff games played). The sociology major in the regular season, led the team with 24 points (6th in OUA) and scored 8 goals while playing in all 26 games as she was named OUA West MVP and first team All-Star in her unforgettable 2025-26 campaign on the ice. Heard scored the game-winning goal in the third period on March 14 in the OUA Championship Game to clinch the McCaw Cup for Guelph's 8th conference championship in program history.
