MHKY: Gryphons Open Regular Season with Loss in Windsor

Box Score
Windsor, ON - Wednesday night in Windsor the Gryphons Men's Hockey team lost 5-1 to the Lancers in the opening game of the 2015-16 season. The Lancers scored four goals in the final period to break open a tight game.
Trevor Morbeck lines up for a faceoff vs Windsor Oct. 7, 2015The last time these two teams met, the Gryphons were sweeping the Lancers in the OUA West Final to book a spot in the Queen's Cup and CIS Championships. Despite out-shooting the Lancers 13-8 in the opening period, it was Windsor who held a 1-0 lead after Scott Prier's shot beat Gryphon goalie Andrew D'Agostini. The score would stay that way after a scoreless 2nd period. D'Agostini, the centrepiece of the Gryphons magical playoff run a year ago, was reminding Gryphon fans why he was named the Top Goalie at the CIS Championships in March with several big saves in the 2nd period to help keep it a one-goal game. With under 30 seconds to go in the period, the Gryphons came close to tying it up but a sharp angled shot hit the post and stayed out. After 40 minutes of play, the defending OUA Champions found themselves trailing 1-0.
In the 3rd period, things would open up as goals suddenly started coming fast and furious. In a flash, the Lancers lead grew to 3-0 after Kyle Hope and Julian Luciani scored 59 seconds apart. However, just 14 seconds after Windsor had taken a 3-0 lead, the Gryphons would get one right back. Guelph was able to go to work on the power play when Captain Nick Trecapelli's point shot was re-directed home by second year forward Scott Simmonds. The goal from Simmonds, who also plays on the Gryphons Men's Rugby team, gave the Gryphons some life as the deficit was trimmed to 3-1 with 14:55 still to go in the final frame. However, the Lancers would restore their three goal lead with a power play marker of their own from Ryan Green. Right before the final horn sounded, the Lancers would tack on another to make the final 5-1 in a game that was much closer than the final score indicated.
Andrew D'Agostini made 30 saves on the night. Shots were fairly even overall with Windsor holding a slim 35-33 edge.
Although the OUA regular season is now underway, the Gryphons will take a little break from league play this weekend as they embark on a two-game NCAA road trip. On Friday night, the Gryphons will be in South Bend, Indiana to face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish with puck drop set for 7:35pm. On Sunday, it's off to Moon, Pennsylvania to face the Robert Morris Colonials in a 2pm matinee matchup. The Gryphons next OUA game will take place on Thursday, October 15 when they travel to the old Maple Leaf Gardens to face the Ryerson Rams (7:30pm). The Gryphons home opener is set for Saturday, October 17 when they will raise their 2014-15 OUA Championship banner and host the Waterloo Warriors.
