MHKY: Gryphons Comeback Falls Short Against Undefeated Western

London, ON - Saturday night at Thompson Arena in London, the Gryphons Men's Hockey team lost 3-2 to the Western Mustangs. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 1-4-0 on the season while the No. 9-ranked Mustangs improve to 5-0-0. After falling behind 1-0 in the opening period, the Gryphons would answer back early on in the second period. Second year centre Michael Stevens (Brantford, ON) scored his first goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1. However, the Mustangs would answer with a pair of goals coming just two minutes apart as Western took a 3-1 lead to the final period. In the 3rd, rookie Stephen Hiff (Cambridge, ON) would score his first OUA goal as the Gryphons dominated play for the majority of the second half of the game. In fact, Guelph outshot Western 26-9 over the final two periods but were unable to find the equalizer. In net for the Gryphons was Scott Stajcer who turned away 26 of the 29 shots sent his way. Guelph outshot Western 34-29 on the night. Next up for the Gryphons, a trip up north to face Nipissing on Friday night (Oct. 30) in North Bary and Laurentian Saturday night (Oct. 31) in Sudbury.
