MHKY: Two 3rd Period Goals Lift Ryerson Past Gryphons

Box Score
Toronto, ON - Thursday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, the Gryphons Men's Hockey team lost 2-1 to the Ryerson Rams. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 0-2-0 on the season while the Rams improve to 2-1-0.
Goals were hard to come by on Thursday night at the old Maple Leaf Gardens as the Gryphons and Ryerson Rams went at it in what was a fast-paced, free flowing game. Gryphons second year goalie Andrew D'Agostini was brilliant in between the pipes for Guelph, and was certainly tested right out of the gates. Just over a minute into the Tom Kohler battles along the boards with Ryerson's Joel Wigleopening period of play, Ryerson's Sam Blanchet was awarded a penalty shot. In what was a sign of things to come, D'Agostini would come up big and turn away Blanchet to keep the game scoreless early on. The Gryphons outshot the Rams 16-9 in the opening period but had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard as it was a scoreless game after 20 minutes of play.
In the 2nd period, the Gryphons would open the scoring thanks to their promising rookie forward, Dylan Gilbert (Oakville, ON). The 6-2, 205 pound winger was in the right place at the right time when Nick Trecapelli's point shot was re-directed and found Gilbert's stick at the side of the net. Gilbert, who played for the Evansville Icemen in the East Coast Hockey League, had a wide open cage and easily deposited the first goal of his CIS career to give the Gryphons a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.
In the 3rd period, Ryerson was able to take advantage of some uncharacteristic Gryphon turnovers and get back into the game. Just over five minutes into the 3rd period, Ryerson would tie the game at 1-1 when a Rams 2-on-1 was finished off by Joel Wigle. With 5:05 remaining in regulation, the Rams would once again capitalize on a Guelph turnover. Gryphons second year defenceman Reilly O'Connor, who had a terrific game most of Thursday night and who has turned out to be one of Guelph's most reliable defenceman, made an uncharacteristic mistake when he was unable to corral a puck in his feet on a "D-to-D" pass in his own end. Ryerson jumped on the loose puck and turned another 2-on-1 into a goal. This one wasn't pretty. O'Connor's defence partner, Mark Raycroft (Woodstock, ON) hustled back and sprawled to break up the pass attempt on the 2-on-1. Unfortunately for the Gryphons, the Ryerson pass attempt deflected off of Raycroft's stick and past a helpless D'Agostini in what would prove to be the game-winning goal. Ryerson's Aaron Armstrong would get credit for the goal. It was a tough way to end it for the Gryphons who led for most of the game.
D'Agostini was solid in net, turning away 31 of the 33 Ryerson shots sent his way. The Gryphons outshot the Rams 35-33 on the night but drop their second straight to open the season after suffering a 5-1 defeat in their OUA season opener in Windsor last Wednesday (Oct. 7).

The Gryphons will now return home for their 2015-16 home opener as they play host to the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, October 17. Prior to puck drop (7:30pm) the Gryphons will unveil the championship banner commemorating their 2014-15 OUA title.
