The Guelph Gryphons family is mourning the loss of University of Guelph student-athlete Jacob Winterton. Winterton passed away this week at the age of 25 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Winterton, a dedicated student athlete and proud member of the men's hockey program, made a lasting impact both on and off the ice throughout his four seasons with the University of Guelph (2021-22 to 2024–25). A Bachelor of Commerce graduate (2025), Jacob balanced academic excellence with athletic commitment, embodying the spirit of what it means to be a Gryphon.
Jacob was originally scheduled to begin his MBA at Lang in May; however, his start date was delayed as he underwent cancer treatment. He commenced his studies in September and remained a regular presence with this year's Gryphon team before needing to step away from both academics and athletics to continue treatment.
"Jacob was a tremendous hockey player and an even better person, an absolute pleasure to coach and to be around every day. He fought cancer with an unwavering positive attitude and strength of character that was an inspiration to everyone in our program. Jacob was the strongest, most courageous person I have ever known. He will be dearly missed and his memory will live on in the countless people associated with Guelph Gryphons Hockey that he has inspired. Rest in peace Jake," said Gryphon men's hockey head coach Josh Dixon.
Born on January 9, 2001, in Whitby, Ontario, Jacob was 25 years old. Over his four seasons as a Gryphon, he appeared in 94 games, amassing 26 goals and 41 assists for 67 points. Known for his work ethic, hockey IQ, and steady presence, he was a teammate who elevated the people around him.
"Jake was an amazing player and an even better person. Everyone only had good things to say about him, and he had a positive impact on so many people. He always had a smile on his face and loved to joke around. We will miss him so much and never forget him," said teammate Ethan Doyle.
Before joining the University of Guelph, Jacob built an impressive junior hockey resume. He spent two seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), first with the Flint Firebirds during the 2018–19 season and then with the Oshawa Generals in 2019–20. Across 125 OHL regular season games, he recorded 18 goals, 19 assists, and 37 points. His path to major junior hockey began with the Ajax Pickering Raiders program, where he developed through U16 AAA and U18 AAA before being selected by Flint in the 10th round (189th overall) of the 2017 OHL Priority Selection.
Jacob will be remembered as a thoughtful teammate, a hardworking athlete, and a kind-hearted individual whose presence enriched the Gryphons community and everyone fortunate enough to know him.
