MHKY: Gryphons Wrap up NCAA Road Trip with 5-3 Loss to Robert Morris

Box Score

Pittsburgh, PA -
Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh the Gryphons Men's Hockey team wrapped up a mini two-game NCAA road trip with a 5-3 loss to the Robert Morris Colonials in non-conference exhibition play. The Gryphons finish the trip 0-2 despite scoring 8 goals in two games after the team suffered a 7-5 loss to Notre Dame on Friday night.

Sunday afternoon's game got off to a rough start for the Gryphons as Robert Morris was able to open the scoring just 11 seconds after the opening faceoff. However, much like they did early on against the Fighting Irish, the Gryphons would bounce back with a strong effort the remainder of the period. After recording a goal and an assist on Friday night versus the Fighting Irish, Gryphons second year forward Tryg Strand (Invermere, BC) would put his name on the score sheet once again by tying the game at 1-1 with a goal at the 2:53 mark of the 1st period. Linemates Rob De Fulviis and Dylan Gilbert picked up assists on the goal. That line was at it again later in the period. After Robert Morris took a 2-1 lead, the Gryphons would cap a four goal first period when Gilbert set up De Fulviis who found the back of the net, as the Gryphons once again fought back to tie the game at 2-2.

After a high scoring opening 20 minutes, things would tighten up in the 2nd period. The only goal of the period came from Gryphons rookie Stephen Hiff (Cambridge, ON). Hiff's first goal as a Gryphon gave Guelph a 3-2 lead heading to the final period. Unfortunately for the Gryphons, the Colonials would tie the game at 3-3 with a goal just 32 seconds into the final frame. Two more goals from Robert Morris, just 14 seconds apart, would seal a 5-3 win for the home team. The Colonials out-shot the Gryphons 42-32 on the night, with 21 of the Colonial's 42 shots on goal coming in the final period.

The Gryphons will now resume OUA regular season play with a Thursday night game in Toronto against the Ryerson Rams. After that, they will return home to the Gryphon Centre for their home opener versus Waterloo on Saturday, October 17 at 7:30pm.
