Waterloo, ON – Saturday afternoon at the Waterloo Recreation Centre, the Gryphons women's hockey team won 4-1 over the Laurier Golden Hawks. The Gryphons had four different goal scorers and
Stephanie Nehring made 21 saves for the win. With the victory, the Gryphons improve to 14-2-3 while Laurier falls to 11-5-4.
The Gryphons opened the scoring on the power play when
Brittany St James found the back of the net for a second straight game. Laurier would later answer back, as the game was tied 1-1 heading to the second period.
In the second period, assistant captain
Jessica Pinkerton would set up captain
Kaitlyn Mora for her seventh goal of the season, giving the Gryphons a 2-1 lead heading to the third. After a pair of veterans gave Guelph the lead, a trio of rookies would extend it to 3-1. Alana Sims would score her third goal of the season, with fellow first year players
Sophie Contant and
Katherine Bailey picking up assists on the goal.
Christine Grant's sixth goal of the season would put it out of reach as the Gryphons would go on to the 4-1 victory to sweep the season series versus Laurier (Guelph beat Laurier 4-0 back on Nov. 15).
Gryphons All-Star goalie Stephanie Nehring (Oshawa, ON) made 21 saves and improves to 12-2-0 on the season with a goals against average of just 1.19. As a team, it has been a span of nine games since the last time the Gryphons allowed their opponent to score more than one goal in a game (Nov. 21 at Windsor they won 4-3 in SO).
The Gryphons (14-2-3) now sit just two points behind Western (15-1-3) for top spot in the OUA standings. The Gryphons will be in action again on Super Bowl Sunday when they take on the Warriors in Waterloo on Sunday afternoon at 2:30pm. After that, the Gryphons and Mustangs will square off on Saturday, February 7
th at 2pm at the Gryphon Centre.
