Box Score Hamilton, ON – The University of Guelph women's volleyball team dropped a five-setter on the road to McMaster on Thursday night. Set scores were 26-24, 25-19, 12-25, 17-25 and 13-15. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 8-8 while the Marauders improve to 13-3.
The Gryphons jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the first set but a 9-2 McMaster run had them leading 16-12 at the technical timeout. Guelph trailed by as many as five but closed the gap and took the lead late to win the set 26-24. Set two featured a slow start by the Gryphons but they turned it around in the middle of the set to lead 16-13 at the technical. From there, Guelph's lead grew and they maintained it to close the set with a 25-19 win.
The beginning of the third set is where the Gryphons started to struggle as they fell behind early and never recovered losing 25-12. The lead changed sides early in set four with McMaster leading 16-14 at the timeout but a 6-0 run allowed the Marauders to win the set 25-17. Guelph played from behind for most of the fifth set as they were down 8-6 at the changeover and trailed 14-10 before pulling to within 1 late, but a back row Mac kill finished the comeback with a 15-13 win.
Coach Funk stated, "Our lack of killer instinct cost us again tonight as we had them down early. Now we have to recover to play a tough defensive team in Waterloo tomorrow night."
Madison Dedecker (Dorchester, ON) led the Guelph offense with 14 points (12 kills, 2 aces) followed by
Jennifer Johnstone (North Vancouver, BC) with 10 (6 kills, 1 ace, 3 blocks) while
Kristen Almhjell (Richmond, BC) contributed 19 digs on defense. The Gryphons' weekend continues tomorrow when they host the Waterloo Warriors at 6pm.
