Edmonton (February 7, 2014) - The Guelph Gryphons opened up the 2014 CIS Track and Field Championships on Thursday, hosted by the University of Alberta.

Guelph's women's team after Day 1 sits tied with the Calgary Dinos for first place. Both teams accumulated 19 points to lead the pack. For the men, they are tied for tenth overall.

The women weight throwers started off the championships and Guelph'sÂ
Sarah Dougherty didn't waste any time earning the Gryphons their first medal of the meet. The third-year earned a bronze medal with a distance of 17.19m. First place went to Lethbridge's Kayla Gallagher, the No.1 seed with a distance of 18.66m while Saskatchewan's Tayrn Suttie, the 2011 CIS Outstanding Female Athlete of the Meet, earned silver.

Looking strong on the track was first yearÂ
Marissa Kurtimah finishing with a silver medal in the 60m dash with a time of 7.52. The gold went to Yorks Khamica Bingham with a championship record time of 7.26.Â

The men's and women's 4x200m relay teams advanced to the finals. The women's team advanced with a lightning fast time of 1:39.80 to qualify as the second fastest team in the finals.

Day two gets underway at 4:30 p.m. MT with the women's shot put, and concludes after the 4 x 800m relays at 8:15 p.m.MT.
