WHKY: Gryphons win 3-1 over Nipissing

Box Score
Guelph, Ont. – The Gryphon women's hockey team won 3-1 Saturday afternoon over Nipissing.  The Gryphons improve to 8-2-2 on the season and sit in a tie for second in the OUA.  The win also snapped Nipissing's five game winning streak.

Coming into the matchup, the two teams were right beside each other in the standings with the Gryphons in 5th and the Lakers in 6th.  Nipissing was riding a 5 game win streak, while the Gryphons lost their last game to the first place Western Mustangs.

The first period of the game was a back and forth affair between the two teams as they felt each other out defensively. Guelph's top line of Kaitlyn Mora (Guelph, ON), Christine Grant (Cambridge, ON) and Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, ON) were putting the pressure on the Lakers defense, with multiple chances to put the home side up a goal. The period would end with no score.
The second period started with a scare for the Gryphons as a goal was called back on a crease violation by the Lakers' Brittany Crago (Stoufville, ON). Head Coach Rachel Flanagan changed up her lines putting Mora with Kelly Gribbons (Port Elgin, ON) and Averi Nooren (Alymer, ON) which had the best chances in the second period, but it was Christine Grant who would open the scoring for the Gryphons to give Guelph a slim 1-0 lead heading to the third.

A frantic final frame made for exciting hockey as the puck was bouncing in every direction. The play was back and forth again with chance after chance occurring for both teams. With four minutes left Kaley Tienhaara (Thunder Bay, ON) took a checking to the head penalty putting the Gryphons on the power play. Guelph was able to convert with Kaitlin Lowy (Toronto, ON) giving the Gryphons a 2-0 lead with only 3 minutes to play in the game. Rachael Cassidy (London, ON) would take a tripping penalty directly after the goal and Nipissing would get one back with a goal by the captain, Carly Marchment (Courtice, ON). The last two minutes were playing on a power play for the Lakers as they pressured for the tying goal. However, Pinkerton would ice the game on a short-handed empty net goal.

The Gryphons will be in action again on Sunday afternoon at 2pm when they host Laurentian.
