Guelph, Ont. – After a disappointing 1-0 loss to the Waterloo Warriors on Thursday, the Gryphon women's hockey team bounced back on Saturday night in a big way by shutting out the defending OUA champion Laurier Golden Hawks 4-0 at the Gryphon Centre. Gryphon goaltender Stephanie Nehring (Oshawa, Ont.) recorded 43 saves in the shutout.
It was a dominating performance by the Gryphons, who outplayed the Golden Hawks from start to finish. Laurier goaltender Amanda Smith (Burlington, Ont.) was busy as the Gryphons fired 43 shots her way on the night. Guelph's first goal would come on their first power play of the game after Laurier player Montana Merante (Orangeville, Ont.) was called for hooking. With 34 seconds left in the man advantage Leigh Shilton (Belleville, Ont.) would fire one in from the slot to make it 1-0. The Gryphons would end the period with another goal from Averi Nooren (Aylmer, Ont.), as her team-leading fifth goal of the season made it 2-0 Guelph.
A nice re-direction by Alana Sims (Whitby, Ont.) in the second period pushed the Gryphons' lead to 3-0, and Christine Grant would end any hopes of a Laurier comeback in the third period when she made it 4-0 with just under six minutes remaining.
Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, Ont.) and Katie Mora (Guelph, Ont.) would both record a two-point night in the win.
The Gryphons will hit the ice again on Friday November 21
