Gryphons complete sweep in Thunder Bay

Thunder Bay, Ont. - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team completed a weekend sweep of the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 victory. Set scores were 25-15, 25-17, 23-25 & 25-8. The first set saw the Gryphons fall behind early trailing 6-1 forcing an early timeout to be called. After that, Guelph came alive with some great blocking and defense as they quickly closed the gap and took the lead  leading to a 25-15 win. In set 2, the Gryphons maintained an early lead and expanded it late to win 25-17. The third set was a back and forth battle with neither team able to forge a comfortable lead, but Lakehead were able to see a two point lead through to a 25-23 win. Set 4 saw Guelph jump out to an early 7-1 lead and they continued to put pressure on Lakehead with block and defense. The Gryphons were able to close out the match with a decisive 25-8 win.
 
Coach Funk said, "We were much more steady today than we were on Saturday. Our squad did a great job of limiting runs by the opposition and we blocked and defended well today."

Nicole Collard led the offense with 15 points (7 kills, 8 blocks) followed by Shannon Morelli with 14 (13 kills, 1 block) while Kristen Almhjell had 22 digs to anchor the defense.

Guelph's next action is at home next Friday when they host the Brock Badgers at 7pm.
