Hamilton, Ont. (October 11, 2014) - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team wrapped up the Mizuno McMaster Thanksgiving tournament on Saturday morning with a 3-1 victory over the Waterloo Warriors. Set scores were 25-20, 25-19, 21-25 & 25-18.
Â
The first set started with Guelph jumping out to a 10-5 lead but a 7-2 Waterloo run had them leading midway through the set. The Gryphons recovered to forge ahead 21-16 and were able to finish the set at 25-20. Set two started poorly for Guelph as they fell behind early but they rebounded to lead 16-11 at the technical timeout. Waterloo closed to within a point but a 4-1 Gryphon run enabled them to take control of the set winning 25-19. The third set again saw Guelph start poorly as they fell behind 8-3 and had to play from behind for most of the set. The Gryphons managed to claw their way back even and held a brief one point lead at 20-19 but unforced hitting errors sunk Guelph's comeback hope as they dropped the set 25-21. Set 4 saw another poor start as the Gryphons fell behind by as many as five points early on before forging ahead at 16-15. Guelph hung tough down the stretch and were helped by some Waterloo hitting errors to finish the set and the match at 25-18.

Coach Funk stated, "Our pre-match prep was better today and we played with more energy than we did the previous day. I think we got some solid contributions from a number of people in different roles and that helped us survive some bad stretches so it was a good win to end the pre-season."
Â
The Gryphon offense was led by
Nicole Collard with 12 points (8 kills, 3 blocks, 1 ace) followed by
Rebecca Breau with 8 (6 kills, 2 aces) while on the defensive side,
Kristen Almhjell led the defense with 19 digs.

Guelph will begin its regular season schedule next weekend on the road as they travel to Toronto to visit the Ryerson Rams on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
