Gryphons Advance to Consolation Final

Guelph 3, RMC 0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-18)

Hamilton, Ont. (October 10, 2014) - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team advanced to the consolation final of the Mizuno McMaster Thanksgiving tournament on Friday afternoon with a 3-0 win over the RMC Paladins. Set scores were 25-15, 25-12 & 25-18.

The first set saw the teams trade points early on with Guelph eventually opening up a 5 point lead. From there, RMC errors allowed the Gryphons to win 25-15. Set 2 started well for Guelph as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead which they maintained until the midway point of the set. The Gryphons again pulled away late to take the set 25-12. The third set started with the teams trading points again early on but Guelph opened up a lead in the middle of the set to win 25-18.

Coach Funk said, "We played well enough to stay ahead through most of the match but we are still lacking in focus at times which may not be enough against a tough Waterloo opponent tomorrow."

The Gryphons were led offensively by Kayla McMullen (6 kills) and Madison Dedecker (5 kills, 1 ace) both with 6 points followed by Chelsea Bott with 5 (5 kills).

Guelph will finish the tournament tomorrow morning against Waterloo at 10am.
