Guelph, Ont. (January 17, 2014) – The Guelph Gryphons men's hockey team suffered a loss to the York Lions at the Sleeman Centre on Friday night with a final score of 2-1 in their annual Frosty Mug game. The loss drops the Gryphons to 9-8-3 and moves the Lions to 10-8-1.

The first period started with both teams struggling to keep possession of the puck, but neither offense was able to get through the opposing defensemen. York player Sam Gilbert (Montreal, Que.) came close to scoring for the Lions after a rebound off of Gryphon goalie Andrew Loverock pads. The puck went off the iron and the game remained scoreless.

The Gryphons gained a two-man advantage after a high sticking call on York player Troy Barss (Barrie, Ont.) at 10:53 and another high sticking call on Mark Cross (Strasbourg, Sask.) at 11:11. The Gryphons were able to set up in front of the net and score shortly after with Teal Burns passing to Kenneth Peroff who knocked the puck in from outside of the crease to make it 1-0 for Guelph, with James Merrett also on the assist.

York would start off the second period with a power play and would score on the power play after a shot from the top of the circle from Mike Lombardi (Richmond Hill, Ont.) to tie it up at 1-1, with Mark Cross and John de Gray (Markham, Ont.) on the assists. The Lions would continue to put added pressure on the Gryphon defense and end up outshooting the Gryphons 8-7 in the second period. Nicklas Huard would attempt to break the tie with a breakaway through the neutral zone, but his shot would not reach the net after being deflected off of the skate of a York defensemen, keeping the game tied at 1-1 to end the second period.

The Gryphons start the third period with another power play early on after an unsportsmanlike conduct call against Evan Gravenor (Winnipeg, Man.) at 2:11. The Gryphons would set up in front of the net but ultimately be boxed out by the York defense. Kyle Neuber tried to punch the puck in the net from around the bar, but would be unsuccessful as Chris Perugini (King City, Ont.) smothered the puck.

A turnover shortly after the power play would lead to a breakaway by Gravenor, trying to slap the puck in from the top of the circle. An impressive save by Loverock kept the game tied, but not for long as Gravenor took the rebound around the net and passed it to Chad Hohmann (Salmon Arm, B.C.) who scored York's second goal of the night making it 2-1 for the Lions, with John de Gray also on the assist.

The Gryphons would pull their goalie in an attempt to tie the game up in the last remaining minute of play, but would be unsuccessful and the score would remain 2-1 for the York Lions.

The Gryphons were able to out shoot the York Lions with a total of 33-21, but were not able to out score them as the final score was 2-1.

The Guelph Gryphon men's hockey team hits the ice again on Thursday, January 21st at the Gryphon Centre against the Western Mustangs with the puck set to drop at 7:30 p.m.
