Gryphons wrap up weekend in Kingston with 5th straight victory, 3-0 over Queens

Box Score
Guelph 3, Queen's 0

Kingston, Ont. (January 12, 2014) – The University of Guelph women's volleyball team continued their win streak on Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 win against the Queen's Gaels in Kingston. Set scores were 25-15, 25-22 & 25-23.

With the victory the Gryphons earned their fifth straight win and take sole possession of first place in the OUA West with a 9-4 record.

The first set was competitive as both teams took turns siding out regularly early on. With the Gryphons leading 18-14, they went on a 6-0 run to put the set out of reach winning 25-15. Set 2 started with Queen's jumping out to a 4-0 lead but Guelph reeled them in at 8 to tie it up. Neither team could open up a lead through the middle of the set, but at 16 all, the Gryphons seized the lead with a 3 point run and maintained it to finish the set at 25-22. The third set was close throughout with neither squad leading by more than 2 points until Guelph forged ahead 16-12 at the technical timeout. Queen's would not go quietly though and with some at times spectacular defence, tied the score at 22. The Gryphons maintained their cool though and with a Becky Breau ace, they finished the match 25-23.

Coach Funk stated, "We got a quintessential road win today against a very good opponent. We were cool and composed throughout this match and didn't get rattled when they made some amazing digs to steal some points from us. Our serve receive was rock solid and we got great performance from everyone involved."

Guelph had three players with 12 points: Rachel Petcoff (11 kills, 1 ace), Rebecca Breau (10 kills, 1 ace, 1 block) and Madison DeDecker (11 kills, 1 block). Kristen Almhjell anchored the Gryphons serve receive and led both teams with 23 digs.

The Gryphons return home next weekend to host the Lakehead Thunderwolves for a pair of matches Friday (Jan. 17) and Saturday (Jan. 18) respectively. Both games at 6:00 p.m.
