Genevieve Lalonde made her return from injury a triumphant one as she captured the Canada Summer Games 2000 metre steeplechase title, breaking the Canadian Record in the process.
The youngster had been forced to miss the Canadian Championships in June after spraining her ankle in practice, missing the Championships was extremely difficult for Lalonde as the event was held in her hometown of Moncton. After being out for over month, Lalonde was granted an injury exemption and added to the New Brunswick team for the Canada Summer Games, which are being held this week in Sherbrooke, the move proved to be a wise one as Lalonde dominated the race winning by over 10 seconds and breaking Lydia Willemse four year old Canadian record with her time of 6 minutes 32.45 seconds.
The performance capped a strong day for University of Guelph athletes at the event as both
Yves Sikubwabo and
Julia Wallace advanced to the finals in their respective events, Sikubwabo advanced in the 800 metres, while Wallace advanced in the long jump, both finals will be conducted on Friday; Wallace will also be competing in the high jump final on Friday as well as competing in the triple jump final on Thursday. Lalonde will look to add a second gold in Thursday's 1500 metre final.
