Â
On the men's side theÂ
John Fitzgerald struck gold for the Gryphons, defeating University of Alberta's Jamie Hoffman (Calgary, AB) with scores of 3-0 and 2-0. Fitzgerald has worked very hard this year to achieve his title and he did it in a convincing fashion. Fitzgerald was also awarded the R.W. Pugh Fair Play Award. At the banquet he was awarded this years fair play award, a very well deserved award that is given to the wrestler that the coaches and referees feel demonstrated the most fair play at all the events through the year.
Also, on the men's side, third-yearÂ
Mathieu Deschatelets finished fourth after having to pull out of his semi final match with an Alberta wrestler after tearing his ACL. RookieÂ
Navrit Wirach, impressed the competition with a seventh place finish in his first year at a National Championship.
Â
The Gryphon women had a lot to celebrate winning a total of two medals.Â
Jade Papke andÂ
Kelsey Gsell both earned silver medals in their respective weight classes (51 kg and 82kg).
On the women's side, third-year Gsell finished with a silver after getting caught and pinned in the final match that she was leading in for most of the way. Â
Jade Papke also had a great day and finished with a silver medal. Her performance on both days was excellent, in her final match she lost the first round and then had a great recovery in the second round to win it 4-to-1, however then lost a take down with very little time on the clock to a former CIS champion. Papke has moved from 48 kilos to the 51 kilo weight class this year.
