GUELPH, Ont. - The men' hockey team are set to start a three-game OUA West semifinal series with the Windsor Lancers this week.
The Lancers will have home-ice advantage in the series and host game one on Thursday (Feb. 21) at 7:30pm. The Gryphons will host the second game onSaturday (Feb. 23) at 7:30pm at the Gryphon Centre. If the third game is needed the series will return to Windsor on Sunday (Feb. 24) for a 7:30pm start.
During the regular season the Gryphons went 2-1 with the Lancers in their head-to-head play. Guelph took wins of 3-2 (Nov.3)
and 4-1 (Feb.2) while the Lancers earned a 5-2 win on Dec. 1.
The Gryphons are entering this series after disposing of the Laurier Golden Hawks in a hard-fought three game quarter-final matchup. Each of the games was decided by a single goal and two games went to overtime, including the third game. Rookie centre Nick Huard (North Bay, Ont.) led the team with six points (3G, 3A) in the series and currently leads the OUA playoff scorers. JT. MacDonald follows closely behind with five points scored in the playoffs (3G, 2A).
The Lancers defeated the York Lions in two straight games (3-2OT, 4-2) to clinch their OUA West quarter-final series and move to the second round of the post-season. Windsor started the year winning 12-of-16 games in the first half of the season and made multiple appearances in the CIS rankings, reaching as high as No. 6. The team fizzled a little in the New Year, however are proven contenders finishing the season as the second seed in the OUA West. During the regular season, Windsor outscored its opponents 101-80 and were ranked 8th in the country in goals scored. They are led in scoring by Spencer Pommels and Evan Sibbard with 38 and 37 points respectively. In net, Parker Van Buskirk has played in 25 games, recording a 14-10 record to go along with a 2.83 goals against average, .909 save percentage, and two shutouts.
