VICTORIA (CIS) – The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds took a jump in the standings thanks to CIS All-Canadian Hannah Haughn who scored three second-half goals in Friday's 7-1 victory over the Guelph Gryphons at the 2013 Field Hockey Canada-CIS national championship in Victoria. The T-Birds are now on top of the standings with six points while the Gryphons are still on the hunt for their first win of the tournament.
 
Erin Houle was the lone goal scorer for the Gryphons who broke T-Birds keeper Bea Francisco's opportunity for a second-straight shutout. Last year the T-Birds blanked Guelph 5-0 in round-robin play.
 
The Thunderbirds had four different players contribute in the opening frame including Miranda Mann, Sara McManus, Gabby Jayme and Cassandra Tayler. Former CIS Rookie of the Year Haughn notched three second-half goals for the 'Birds who now have a plus-16 goal differential after two games played.
 
Fifth-year captain Mann opened the scoring in the sixth minute of play with her drag flick low right that took a touch off a Gryphons defender. Two minutes later and the T-Birds made it two-for-two on penalty corners. An initial shot was blocked by All-Canadian Houle but McManus hammered home the rebound between the legs of Guelph keeper Kaye McLagan.
  McLagan was outstanding for the remainder of the match defending four additional first-half corners and putting up seven saves in the opening frame.
 
The T-Birds then went 17 minutes without a goal until a precise passing play that started with diagonal ball from Poonam Sandhu set up Jayme for her first goal of the tournament. Sophie Huijskens drew two defenders at the top of the circle and laid a ball off left for Jayme to one-time into the net and lift the two-time defending CIS champs up by three.
 
Against the flow Houle did all the hard work to run the left baseline and was rewarded on an off-paced back-hand pass that floated near side past Francisco to get the Gryphons on the board.
 
The T-Birds closed out the half with a finish from Tayler, her third of the tournament, as UBC entered the break with a 4-1 lead.
 
In the second half Guelph did well to keep the Birds at bay. Jessica Donaldson was a defensive thwart to all left-side attacks by the T-Birds.
 
In the 50^th minute, Haughn started her scoring run shovelling a back hand shot into the net after a Kate Gillis cross from the right side. The second-year forward lifted UBC by five only three minutes later on a penalty corner. Caitlin Evans bumped the ball left for Natalie Sourisseau to sweep to the near post and Haughn made perfect on her reverse-stick deflection as UBC took a commanding 6-1 lead.
 
The two-time All-Canadian did not stop there as she tallied once more in the 69^th minute putting in a rebound after a fluffy of UBC attack to bring the final score to 7-1 in favour of the T-Birds.
 
Now advancing to the top of the standings the T-Birds will get ready for their Canada West rematch against the western champions, the Victoria Vikes, at 3:00 p.m. Saturday. The Gryphons will also have a rematch of the OUA finals facing the Waterloo Warriors at 1:00 p.m. Saturday. Both games will be live at http://canadawest.tv
