Gryphons defeat Western & advance to OUA championship

Toronto - The University of Guelph Gryphons and the University of Waterloo Warriors will battle for the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) banner on Sunday after winning their respective semifinals on Saturday at York Stadium.

The Gryphons played in the second semifinal of the day and defeated the Western Mustangs 2-0. The game remained scoreless for the entire first half and well into the second, until Guelph's Daniela Jelec broke the deadlock with a goal in the 45th minute. From that point on the Gryphons dominated play and had numerous scoring chances, finally getting the insurance marker just before the end of the game, in the 69th minute, by Allison Chute.

The fourth-seeded Warriors produced the upset of the season in the first semifinal, knocking off the previously undefeated Toronto Varsity Blues by a score of 2-0. Waterloo will play in the final for the first time since 2004 – the Warriors lost that game 5-1 to the Varsity Blues – while the Gryphons will go for their first title since 2010. They have played in each of the last two finals as well, settling for the silver each time. The championship game will begin at 12pm at York Stadium and will be preceded by the bronze medal contest between Toronto and Western.

In the first semifinal, Waterloo forward Stephanie Snyder (Waterloo, Ont.) scored both goals for the Warriors, the first in the 22nd minute off a corner and the second just five minutes later on a penalty stroke for the only goals of the game. The Varsity Blues, who were the two-time defending OUA champions and went 11-0-1 in the regular season, controlled play for most of the second half while they tried to get back into the game. Toronto had numerous scoring opportunities, including one goal that was waved off, but could not capitalize on its chances before time expired. The win is Waterloo's first over Toronto since 2003 and avenges a pair of regular-season losses in which they were outscored 12-0 by the Blues.

With their wins, Waterloo and Guelph also qualified for next week's CIS championships, which will be hosted by the University of Victoria Oct. 31 to Nov. 3.
