Gryphons close out opening weekend with a win against Concordia Stingers

Box Score

Guelph, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphon men's hockey team came out with a win Saturday night against the Concordia Stingers with a final score of 3-2 at the Gryphon Centre. With the win the Gryphons move to 2-0-0 on the season.

Guelph started out the game evenly matched with the Concordia Stingers. They had the first power play of the game early on after a call on Stinger player Alex MacDonald for hooking. Concordia was able to use their size and speed to kill the penalty. The only chance in the power play for Guelph came from Teal Burns after he circled the net looking for a shot at the post, but unfortunately the puck was snatched up by the goalie.

Concordia came back immediately after the power play and the first period continued with back and forth action. The Gryphons were able to get on the board first with a quick back handed goal in the crease by Nicklas Huard after a pass from James Merrett at 5:16, making it 1-0. Concordia came back quickly, picking up the pace. A quick shot to the corner by Taylor Lambke (Antigonish, N.S.) after a pass from Ben Dubois (Belle River, Ont.) and George Lovatsis (Markham, Ont.) had Concordia tying it up at 9:52. At 13:08, Concordia got their first power play of the game after Gryphon player Leonard Fabbri was called for hooking. Concordia had few shots on goal, but Guelph had a good chance after a break away by Teal Burns, but the puck went off the post leaving it at 1-1 at the end of the first period.

Guelph started the second period strong with a goal by Ken Peroff 56 seconds into play. After the assist from Rob De Fulviis, Peroff fired it at the net where it was deflected off of a Concordia player's skate into the net, making it 2-1 for the Gryphons. It was back and forth until Nicklas Huard powered down the ice beating the Concordia defensemen. Two of his shots rebounded with James Merrett picking up the second rebound to take his own shot, but both could not beat the Concordia goaltender, Antoine Mastropietro (Montreal, Que.). Concordia had a few breakaways but were not able to beat our defensemen down the ice to the crease, keeping it at 2-1 going into the third period.

The third period started with a beautiful goal from Gryphon player, Brett Appio 37 seconds into play. The pass from Nicklas Huard allowed Appio to power down the ice, beating the Concordia defensemen, making it 3-1 for the Gryphons.  Concordia came back with a goal by Oliver Hinse (Sherbrooke, Que.) after beating our defensemen down the ice. The pass from Jessyco Bernard (Moncton, N.B.) and Alex MacDonald (Monton, N.B.) had Hinse in the perfect position to take on Gryphon goalie Keith Hamilton, making it 3-2. Concordia pulled their goalie for the final minute, but they were not able to beat goaltender Keith Hamilton.

The final score was 3-2 for the Gryphons. The shots on goal were in favour of the Gryphons with a total of 39-30.

The Gryphon men's hockey team hits the ice again on October 18th at 7:30 p.m. against the Lakehead Thunderwolves at home in the Gryphon Centre.
