The Guelph Gryphons rolled past the Lakehead Thunderwolves 5-2 Saturday night and captured three of four possible weekend points. Building off the momentum from their third period comeback Friday night, the Gryphons outhustled Lakehead through most of the game and were full value for their win.
Lakehead opened the scoring in the first on a powerplay goal by Adam Sergerie. Guelph tied the game before the end of the period on a goal by Andrew Merrett (Vernon) on a passing play from Dan Boussard (Fayetteville, N.C.) and Brett Appio (Bolton). Guelph outshot Lakehead 16-9 in the period.
Guelph dominated the second with two goals for a 3-1 lead after two periods. J.T. Macdonald (Niagara Falls) scored on the powerplay on a setup from Matt Lyall (Richmond Hill) and Appio. And Cam Odam (Stittsville) scored on a rocket from the point on a setup by Macdonald.
In the third period, the Gryphons continued with more offense with a picture perfect passing play resulting in a goal by Nick Huard (North Bay) on assists from Appio and Merrett. The Thunderwolves replied with a goal by Jason Grecica before Appio capped off a four point night for the Gryphons with an empty netter set up by Huard and Nathan Martine (Port Colborne).
Brandon Maxwell went the distance for the Gryphons stopping 43 of 45 shots and Alex Dupuis went all the way for the Thunderwolves stopping 36 of 40.
Next action for the Gryphons is the Frosty Mug game on Friday Jan. 18 at the Sleeman Centre at 7:30 P.M. vs. arch rival Waterloo Warriors.
