The Gryphon women's volleyball team returned to regular season action this afternoon, but fell to the Badgers 3-1 at the Bob Davis Gymnasium. Set scores were 25-20, 12-25, 22-25 and 22-25.
 
The loss drops the Gryphons to 3-8, while the Badgers advance to 4-7 on the season.
 
The Gryphons were able to take the first set 25-20, but Brock came out firing in the second set with 13 kills on 28 attempts to win 25-12, to tie the match one game apiece.
 
The third set was offensive for both teams with the Gryphons connecting on 12 kills and Brock finishing with 16, while both teams also had hitting percentages about 20%. Brock closed out the set by the score of 25-22 to take a 2-1 lead in the match, despit a strong effort by Guelph.
 
In the fourth set, the Badgers kept their consistent play going to avoid giving the Gryphons any scoring runs. Guelph made a late push, but the Badgers held them off to secure the 25-22 set victory and a 3-1 match win.
 
Leading the Gryphons was Alanna Kirchner (Markham, ON) and Devon Jones (Rockwood, ON) who had 11 and 10 kills respectively. Ashleigh Andzel (Whitby, ON) collected 23 assists in the match. Guelph libero Kristen Almhjell (Richmond, BC) led both teams with a game-high 26 digs.  
 
As a team, the Gryphons hit .143 with 37 kills and 16 errors, while adding 87 digs and nine blocks. The Badgers finished the match hitting .168 with 46 kills and 20 errors. They also collected 93 digs and nine blocks.
 
Leading the Badgers offense were senior Jennifer McKenzie (Surrey, B.C.) and sophomore Nicole Arthurs (Georgetown, Ont.) who combined for 23 kills. Mckenzie led all players 17.5 total points including 11 kills, 4.5 blocks, two aces and a .450 hitting percentage. Arthurs contributed with 14.5 points, adding 12 kills, 2.5 blocks and a .308 hitting percentage.     
 
 
The Gryphons are next in action Saturday, January 12 at 2pm, when they travel to Thunder Bay to take on the Thunderwolves.
