The University of Guelph women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision tonight to the Toronto Varsity Blues on the road this afternoon. Set scores were 22-25, 29-27, 23-25 & 15-25.
The first set was close through the early going but Toronto led 16-12 at the technical timeout. The Blues increased their lead to 19-12 later in the set but the Gryphons battled back to close the score to 24-22 before falling 25-22. Set 2 was close throughout with neither team leading by more than 3 points. Both teams had set point opportunities but a late ace enabled Guelph to take the set 29-27. The third set saw Toronto take a 13-5 lead only to have Guelph close the gap and tie it later in the set. A two point swing with the scored tied at 22 all was the difference as Toronto took the set 25-23. In set 4, the Blues again jumped out to an early 12-6 lead and Guelph could never close the gap losing 25-15.
Coach Funk said, "We competed much better today than we did yesterday against Ryerson but our defense and blocking let us down at times today." Guelph was led on offense by Julie Gordon with 16 points (15 kills, 1 ace) followed by a trio of players with 10 (Alicia Combe-Dingwall: 7 kills, 1 ace, 2 blocks Devon Jones: 9 kills, 1 ace Ashleigh Andzel: 3 kills, 5 aces, 2 blocks).
The Gryphons' next action is next Fridaywhen they travel to Waterloo to take on the Warriors at 6pm.
