GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphon men's hockey team dropped a 3-1 final tonight to the OUA West leading Western Mustangs at the Gryphon Centre. The Gryphons remain in third place in their division however fall to a 13-7-2 record. The Mustangs improve their record to 18-4-0.
The first period was scoreless but fast paced. The Gryphons tallied five shots on goal and Gryphons' goaltender, A
Andrew Loverock (Elmvale, ON) stopped a total of 10 shots. Only one penalty was recorded in this clean-fought period.
Guelph maintained a strong pressure right from the start of the second period where they were able to initiate the scoring at 4:42 with an impressive wrap-around goal by
Justin Gvora (Thunder Bay, ON) with the helper coming from
Matthew Lyall (Richmond Hill, ON). The Gryphons outshot the Mustangs 12-6 in the second, but unfortunately the Mustangs were able to capitalize on a late power play opportunity when Zach Harnden (Thunder Bay, ON) scored at 19:16 with an assist from Tyler Peters (Sarnia, ON).
The third period was fast paced and hard hitting with great attempts from both teams. The Mustangs were able to capitalize, scoring two goals in the period. Despite Guelph's best efforts they were unable to match the Mustangs' goals. Harnden scored his second of the night at 5:47 with an assist by David Corrente (Mississagua, ON). The third Mustang goal of the game was a wrap-around by Julian Cimadamore (Concord, ON) at 11:09 with help from Matt Marantz (Calgary, AB) and Andrew Eastman (Sharon, ON).
Gryphon goalie, Andrew Loverock finished with 25 saves on 28 shots while Josh Unice earned the win for the Mustangs, turning aside 21 of 22 shots.
