Gryphons Downed by UBC-O in Rematch

The University of Guelph Gryphons women's volleyball team was defeated on Sunday by the UBC-Okanagan Heat 3-0 at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Center. Set scores were 25-10, 25-21, 25-19.

The Heat came out strong in the first set and kept pressure on Guelph throughout with strong serving & defense in winning 25-10.

The Gryphons served tougher in set two and led 16-12 at the technical timeout, but UBC-Okanagan was the more error-free team down the stretch in claiming the set at 25-21.

The third set saw Guelph again claim an early 16-13 lead, but aggressive attacking and some Gryphon errors led to the Heat closing out the match 25-19.

"Today, UBC-O was clearly the better squad in terms of execution. They put pressure on us with serve right from the start and were much more consistent in their attacking and defense than us," said Coach Paul Funk. "I don't think we played poorly overall but after 16 they had much better execution of skills which allowed them to win."

Guelph was led on offense by Marieka Ouimette (2 kills, 3 blocks) and Stephanie Vickers (3 kills, 2 aces) with 5 points each.

The Gryphons pre-season will continue next weekend when they travel to Ottawa for the Gee-Gees Invitational.
