25-20, 25-13, 25-18
Â
With a spot in the OUA playoffs on the line, the Guelph Gryphon women's volleyball team swept the Brock Badgers 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Brock. Set scores were 25-20, 25-13 and 25-18.
Â
With the win, the Gryphons finish seventh in the OUA with a 9-9 regular season record and 18 points. The Gryphons will now travel to Ottawa this Saturday (Feb. 18) to battle the second-seeded Gee Gees. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
Â
The first set did not start well for Guelph, as some early jitters saw them fall behind 5-1. The Gryphons quickly righted to the ship and scored the next seven points to take a lead that they would never relinquish winning 25-20.
Â
Two five-point runs early in set two enabled Guelph to open up a big lead and take the set 25-13.
Â
The third set was side-out volleyball early on but the Gryphons gradually forged a 16-12 lead at the technical timeout. Brock narrowed the gap to three, but could get no closer as Guelph pulled away to win the set and the match at 25-18.
Â
"Today we played a very solid match in a pressure situation," said coach Paul Funk. "The girls were focused during their preparations and stayed on an even keel emotionally during the match which is the way we will have to be next weekend against Ottawa."
Â
Kaitlyn Krizmanich (Carlisle, ON) led the Guelph offense today with 15 points (13 kills, 1 ace, 1 block) followed by Erinn Bickle (Whitby, ON) with 11 (7 kills, 4 blocks) and Brooke Lloyd (Whitby, ON) with 9 (7 kills, 1 ace, 1 block). Â
