GUELPH, Ont. - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team won their third match of the season on Friday (Nov. 24) defeating the Toronto Varsity Blues 3-1 at the W.F. Mitchell Centre. Set scores were 23-25, 25-19, 25-21 & 25-21.
The Gryphons played their most consistent match in many weeks in defeating Toronto in four sets. Guelph got major offensive contributions from numerous players and were very steady in serve receive which allow the Gryphons to side out consistently throughout the match. Coach Funk stated,
" Tonight we got good performances from numerous players, some of the best we've had all year. I thought Alicia Combe-Dingwall had maybe her best match as a Gryphon tonight and Devon Jones was very solid as well." Offensively, Guelph was led by Devon Jones with 14 points (11 kills, 3 aces) followed by Becky Breau with 12 (8 kills, 2 aces, 2 blocks).

The University of Guelph women's volleyball team suffered a straight sets defeat at home the next night (Sat, Nov. 24) to the Ryerson Rams. Set scores were 18-25, 14-25 & 15-25.
The first set was a close battle with neither team able to establish a big lead. Trailing 16-19, Guelph seemed to crack as a number of hitting errors late in the set allowed Ryerson to pull away winning 25-18. The Gryphons fell behind early in set 2 trailing 5-1 and were never able to get closer losing 25-14. Guelph started better in the third set staying close until 14-12, but an 11-3 run to finish the set closed the match with a 25-15 win.
Coach Funk said, "We were only able to play at a high level for about 1 set in total tonight. Ryerson frustrated us with their good defense and we did not respond well when we weren't able to get kills quickly. We have a lot of work to do on our game between now and the start of the second half.".
The Gryphons offense was led by Julie Gordon with 8 points (7 kills, 1 block) followed by Alicia Combe-Dingwall with 6 (5 kills, 1 block).
