GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons Men's Hockey team continued their win streak this afternoon at the Gryphon Centre defeating the UOIT Ridgebacks 3-1, setting their season record to 9-4-1 and putting the Ridgebacks at 5-6-1. The Gryphons are currently riding a seven game win streak and have won nine of their last ten games.
The first period was scoreless but saw 16 shots, 10 by the Gryphons, and six penalty minutes.
Both teams racked up a goal during the second period with Mike Whiteside, from the Ridgebacks, scoring first at 6:18 with assists from Dominik Crnogorac and Chris Purves. The Gryphons responded, tying the game, at 12:09 with a powerplay goal from rookie
Nicklas Huard (North Bay, Ont.) assisted by
Matthew Lyall (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and
Nicholas Trecapelli (Guelph, Ont.)
The third period saw two Gryphon goals and no response from the Ridgebacks, setting the final score at 3-1.
Jon-Thomas MacDonald (Niagara Falls, Ont.) opened the period's scoring at 9:46 and scored his sixth goal of the season, the assist was from Huard. Rookie
Brett Appio also earned his sixth goal of the season, scoring at 11:32 assisted by Lyall and
Daniel Broussard (Fayetteville, NC).
Gryphon goalie,
Brandon Maxwell, stopped 20 shots throughout the game and UOIT's net-minder stopped 27. The Gryphons outshot the Ridgeback's 30-21 on the night and were 1-for-5 on the powerplay, while the Ridgebacks were 0-for-5.
Up next the Gryphons will host the Western Mustangs on Thursday (Nov. 22). Puck drops at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.
