GUELPH, Ont. – The women's hockey team defeated the Ryerson Rams tonight (Nov. 15) with a 6-1 final at the Gryphon Centre. The Gryphons advance to 8-3-2 on the season while the Rams drop to 2-9-0. The Gryphons are now 5-1 at the Gryphon Centre during the regular season.
Guelph's powerplay was effective tonight going 4-for-10 while the Rams were 0-for-4. It was a balanced scoring attack, with 10 different Gryphons getting on the scoresheet.
In net, Brooke Siddall (Windsor, Ont.) had the night off and Kathryn Brazda (Napanee, Ont.) got her first start of the season finishing with 17 saves.
In the first period, the Gryphons got out to an early lead capitalizing in the first minute of their first power play with a goal from Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, Ont.). Almost half way through the period, the Gryphons found themselves with a one-man advantage for the second time, and proved why they are a dangerous team on the power play. Ryerson goaltender, Brianna Tremblay was unable to handle the Gryphon attack, surrendering to Jenna Lanzoratta (Mississauga, Ont.) at 10:14 in the period to advance to a 2-0 lead. Only five minute later the Gryphons scored their third straight power play goal. Tremblay made the initial save, but a tenacious Lanzoratta charged the net and put it in for her second goal of the night. Ryerson fired back with a goal by Janella Brodett to close out the first period 3-1 for the Gryphons. After the first period, the Gryphons were three-for-three on the power play and shots on net were 12-7 in favour of the Gryphons.
In the second period the Gryphons did a good job controlling both sides of the play. Hilary Walsh (Nepean, Ont.) scored an unassisted goal at 7:26 to earn her first goal of the season. The Gryphons took a 5-1 lead following a short handed goal from Amanda Parkins (Kitchener, Ont.). By the end of the second period the Gryphons had taken a 20-12 advantage on shots on net.
Early in the third period, Kimberley Wong (Mississauga, Ont.) combined with Parkins and Christine Grant and fired a shot from the blue line to score the team's sixth goal of the evening while on the power play. The Rams had an opportunity to close the gap while on the power play in the third period but the Gryphons stymied their plans and continued to control the game. The Gryphons outshot the Rams 28-18.
