Chute's hat trick leads Gryphons over Vikes

TORONTO (CIS) – Allison Chute of Greenfield Park, Que., scored three goals as the third-seeded Guelph Gryphons shut out the No. 4 Victoria Vikes 5-0 in the second preliminary round match of the FHC-CIS women's field hockey championship at Varsity Centre,Thursday afternoon.

"I think our team played really well," commented Chute, the OUA rookie of the year. "We were passing really well and our tackling was better than it has been in the past couple of games."

Brittany Seidler, the CIS player of the year from Oliver, Ont., added two goals of her own in the victory.

Chute opened the scoring when she lifted the ball over a sprawling goaltender Sheriden Goodmanson of Victoria in the 16 the minute of the match.

The Vikes began to press towards the end of the half, but to no avail as the OUA silver medallist Gryphons maintained a 1-0 lead at the 35-minute break.

Chute notched her second goal just one minute into the second period. The first-year midfielder found herself all alone in the circle and made no mistake in finding the back of the net. She then completed the natural hat trick in the 43 rd minute when she one-timed a pass from second-year forward Candice Hawksworth of Oakville, Ont., past Goodmanson to find the mesh.

The young Victoria squad turned on the pressure and peppered netminder Kaye McLagan of Mitchell, Ont., with shots, but the fourth-year veteran stood her ground.

Seidler added her name to the score sheet in the 49th and 69th minutes to give the Gryphons the dominant five-goal advantage.

"Guelph had some great scoring opportunities and they capitalized," said Victoria Vikes head coach Lynne Beecroft. "Tonight's game is huge for us. We'll get our players minds turned around and forget this game because it's already history."

Victoria (0-1) has a quick turnaround and will face the No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds (1-0) at 5:50 p.m.

Guelph (1-0) returns to action tomorrow morning and will take on the host Toronto Varsity Blues (1-0) in a rematch of the OUA final, won 5-2 by the Blues.
