Gryphons Fall to Western in 4 at McMaster Tournament

The University of Guelph women's volleyball team fell to Western this morning in the second round of the McMaster Thanksgiving tournament 3-1. Set scores were 12-25, 18-25, 25-16 & 19-25.

The Gryphons had better energy in the first 2 sets this morning but continued to struggle with execution of basic skills in falling 25-12 & 25-18. Guelph managed to find a better level in set three as their passing and defending improved taking the set 25-16. The fourth set was close at the technical timeout, but Western went on a 7-0 run thanks to many Gryphon unforced errors and won the set and match at 25-19.

Coach Funk said, "We are struggling in all phases of the game this weekend and as a result, our confidence is not high. We were able to execute on a basic level in sets 3 & 4, but it's hard to win when so many players are struggling at the same time. We have to take the positives from this morning and try to grind our way out of our present situation."

The Gryphons were led on offence by Julie Gordon with 14 points (10 kills, 1 ace, 3 blocks) followed by Nicole Collard with 12 (9 kills, 1 ace, 2 blocks).

Guelph will wrap up the tournament Saturday morning at 10am against either Lakehead or McMaster.
