Gryphons Come Back For First Win

Guelph 3 vs. McMaster 2 Set Scores: 23-25, 26-28, 25-14, 25-21, 15-9

The University of Guelph women's volleyball team recovered from a 2 sets to none deficit in defeating the McMaster Marauders in 5 sets tonight at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Center. Set scores were 23-25, 26-28, 25-14, 25-21 & 15-9.

The first two sets were very similarly played with neither team able to build up a big lead. Some Guelph errors late in the sets allowed McMaster to win both 25-23 & 28-26.

The third set started closely but a 6-1 run in the middle of set by Guelph enabled them to build a lead that they held in winning 25-14.

Set 4 was close as well as the teams were tied at 18 before a late Guelph run led to a 25-21 win forcing a deciding set. In the fifth, a 6-0 run at 5-4 allowed Guelph to build a lead they would not surrender in completing the comeback at 15-9.

Coach Paul Funk said, "We made fewer unforced errors than last weekend and that enabled us to be in a position to win each set tonight. We still need to work on our 'killer instinct' but it was nice to get the first win of the year. I thought Nicole had a great match for being a rookie starter and we had a more diverse offense in terms of multiple people contributing."

Guelph was led on offense by rookie Nicole Collard who had a team high 18 points (16 kills, 2 aces) followed by Julie Gordon with 15 (14 kills, 1 block) while Kristen Almhjell contributed 18 digs on defense.

The Gryphons hit the road tomorrow for a 7pm start in Windsor against the Lancers.
