On Sunday the Gryphon field hockey team dropped a pair of games to Western and Toronto to close out their regular season in second place in the OUA.
The Gryphons faced off against the first place Toronto Blues. Guelph hit the scoreboard first nine minutes into the contest on a goal by
Erin Houle (Burlington, ON). The Blues responded in the 14th minute to even the score
at 1-1. Toronto went in front at minute 29 converting on a stroke. Rookie
Allison Chute (Greenfield Park, QC) retaliated to knot the score at two just before the halftime whistle. Nine minutes into the second session, Toronto earned another stroke and capitalized but Guelph bounced back very quickly to even the tally at three as Chute penetrated the net for her second marker of the game. Unfortunately, the Blues netted the game winner with three minutes to go on a penalty corner for a 4-3 win.
Coach Turley stated, "The play was very fast, physical, end to end action and a seesaw battle." Guelph returned to action against Western in their second game of the day, with a one game break and fell 4-2 to the Mustangs.
Brittany Seidler recorded one goal and one assist while
Candice Hawksworth (Burlington, ON) added a single marker.
Coach Turley, commented, "As this was the final league match and we already had a lock on 2nd place, there was no need to take any risks so we took key players out of our lineup. The Mustangs came out with something to prove and did just that by upsetting us 4-2."
Brittany Seidler rounded out league play as top scorer in the country for the second consecutive year with 19 goals on the season while rookie Ally Chute was second with a tally of 12. The Gryphs posted an 8-3-1 record for second place which warranted a bye on Friday in the OUA quarter-finals finals. They will advance to the OUA semis on Saturday at 2:00 pm against the winner of #3 seed Waterloo and AUS champion, St. Mary's Huskies. The Waterloo Warriors are hosting the OUA Championships in Waterloo.
