The University of Guelph women's volleyball team dropped a five set loss to Lakehead on the final day of the McMaster Thanksgiving tournament onSunday.
Set scores were 25-11, 7-25, 25-14, 18-25 & 14-16.
The match was a roller coaster throughout with each team alternately winning, then playing poorly with multiple unforced errors. A long run of tough serving from Guelph's Jenn Johnstone in the first set was matched and surpassed by Lakehead's Jasmine Fox in the second set. Neither team could sustain momentum from set to set. In the fifth set, Lakehead took an early 8-6 lead, only to allow the Gryphons a 6-1 run to take the lead 12-9. However, Guelph couldn't close the deal as a 7-2 Lakehead run decided the match 16-14.
Coach Funk said, "Today's match was emblematic of our play this weekend. We are capable of good stretches of play but follow it up with equal stretches of poor execution and mental errors. We have a lot of work to do between now and our first league match against Waterloo."
Offensively, Guelph was led by
Jennifer Johnstone with 16 points (9 kills, 4 blocks, 3 aces) followed by
Devon Jones with 11 (9 kills, 1 block, 1 ace).
The Gryphons have next weekend off before starting their league schedule on Friday, Oct. 19 @ 7pm when they host the Waterloo Warriors at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Center.
